a Team: Wildfire story
by Thom Thetford, all rights reserved

I drifted, for how long I can not say. All I know is that I was in a quiet place where I was at peace, but the peace troubled me. So here I floated, alone in a dark, a peaceful yet troubling fog. Yes, peace. I focused on that and drifted farther into the depths.

“Patrick!” came a voice out of the fog. “Wake up, Patrick!”

No, I don’t want to wake up, can’t they see I am at peace finally? Leave me be! Let me drift off stage.

Pain, sharp and distinct, with the pain came a crack of skin on skin, like someone being slapped.

“Don’t you dare leave me here, you bastard! Wake up, damn you” followed by another slap. My head lurched sharply to the side. I was the one being slapped and now I felt the pain instead of noting it in a peacefully detached manner. And I knew that voice, Edith, my beautiful technology angel. I hear the stress in your voice, almost to tears. That was wrong, she would not cry.

“John, stop the van! He is coming too.” Said a not Edith voice.

He is? Why is he not awake? Can’t he see how peaceful it is here? Pain again, and again my head is twisted to the other side.

“Pat, can you hear me? Wake up, please wake up…” Edith said again, her voice drifting away in a veil of despair.

“Edie, you can’t get rid of me that easily.” I managed to speak with a voice that creaked like an old man. “And who let John drive? I thought you wanted me to live.”

With a great sigh of relief, suddenly I was being hugged while still strapped into the bench of our RV. I heard the engine roar dull to a low rumble and finally a low idle as our breakneck speed was finally ground to a halt as we pulled over to the side of the road.

“Oh, yeah, he’s back.” I heard from the driver’s seat.

My body felt like it was a hundred years old and my mind began to force its way out from the black, warm silence that was my unconsciousness. Counting the voices I had heard, I accounted for everyone except for one, Rebecca.

“Where’s Rebecca?”

“Knocked out, near death and he still keeps track of us,” came Peter’s voice from his spot in the back of the van. “She’s back here with me.”

“After we got you in the van,” Edith started, “she was supposed to be the last one in, but she stopped at the door and screamed. We found her lying just outside the door. We thought it might be what attacked you, but that thing high-tailed it for the building when we got there.”

“How is she doing?” I asked.

“Physically she seems okay, her vital signs are steady, but it’s almost like her mind snapped.” Edith continued.

“So, where are we now?” I had tried to sit up and look out the window. At least the window was my goal. I found that my body was as sore as my mind. I had managed to get my body upright, as I glanced out the window, I saw a parking lot, with the ocean in the distance.

There were heavy foot steps as John came back from the driver’s seat. “I parked us at some mall; Edgewater is the name of the place.” Edgewater Mall, I knew the place from years ago. The mall was just down the highway from Beauvoir, about a mile or so, I had not been out for long. It just felt like an eternity; time to catch the team up on current state of affairs. “It would seem that your timing is as impeccable as ever.” I nodded in John’s direction. “How long was I out, then?”

“We had just pulled up when we saw you fighting that ghostly thing.” said Peter, moving forward from his seat in the back of the RV. “It was a good thing we decided to push it a little to get here. I know you didn’t expect us for another hour or so.”

I turned in his direction, “How is Rebecca?”

“She seems to be recovering, her vitals are strong and brain waves are back to normal, too. She seems to be just sleeping now.” He replied, taking a seat towards the back, well away from any technical devices.

Settling down in his seat, John asked, “So, what’s the op, Top?”

“Well for starters, let me catch you up on my vacation. I had been visiting a few of the tourist traps in Biloxi when I overheard someone talking about the deaths at Beauvoir.” I could hear Edith typing away at her console, as I started. John had a puzzled expression on his face as Edith turned her monitor towards him. I knew she was answering his unasked question about what Beauvoir was.

“The people I had been listening to were talking about the mysterious circumstances the body had been found and that it had been the third body found in two weeks. I figured it was worth checking into. The local police were only too happy to share with a federal agency as they really had no clue how to proceed.

“The bodies were found on the grounds at Beauvoir, near the main building. There were no signs of a struggle; it was as if they had simple stopped living. I scanned the bodies and did not find any magical residue; in fact I found exactly nothing, just a big empty vessel.”

“Did you scan them for any residual arcane energy?” Peter interrupted.

“I only did a surface scan, but I did not find anything out of the ordinary there.” I said as I turned back to Peter, “Did you find any arcane energy on Rebecca?”

“Actually yes, that is what is curious she fairly reeked of the stuff. All I can figure form the energy levels is that she got hit by some sort of massive arcane stun gun. If it was a spell, they may have been shooting at you and she caught the edge of it.”

With his last words, I felt all eyes turn to me with one big question: What was I doing poking at hornet’s nests without proper backup.

I lowered my head and refused to offer any excuses for my actions. “Yes,” I coughed a moment and looked them each in the eye, “I made a very grievous mistake. Luckily I was allowed to live and learn from it. I will put myself on report later.” This brought a smile to their faces, I was known for my putting people on report.

“I had originally thought, from my own scans, that this was a simple ghost I was facing and I could get some quick answers. If the ghost pushed, I could banish it. However, it would seem that that was no simple ghost I was facing, but some sort of arcane specter. We need to do some research in the archives and see what has been going on in this area since the Civil War.”

So this, Edith piped up, “On it boss, now checking for any arcane or religious significance in this area for the last 150 years. Do you think it is limited to the Civil War?”

“Actually yes, it or he sounded very authentic for the Civil War time.” I thought for a moment and turned to John, “If memory serves there is a large shopping plaza just north of here, at Pass Road. Since Rebecca is out of service this leaves you to drive us there. No combat maneuvers, Rebecca is still out and I have a hangover from the grave. Right, John?”

“Yes, sir, boss man! You can count on me!” John said, standing to his feet and sharply saluting before turning on his heel to make the driver’s seat.

“But Dad,” Peter piped up from the back seat, “You never let me drive!”

“That is because of your sparkling and magnetic personality, Prince Peter.” I replied, which got me a healthy raspberry before he went back to his seat in the back of the bus.

Yes, this specter is in for a fight. What a wonderful way to spend one’s vacation.

Hostages Taken At Construction Site

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Wed Jun 16, 2009 10:37am CDT

A standoff was reached this morning as an undetermined number of gunmen, calling themselves The New Sons of Ludd, made their demands known from the onsite headquarters of Thetford Construction, in South Bend. Police were called to the site by crewmen arriving at work this morning. The New Sons of Ludd apparently took their prisoners from the night crew working the graveyard shift at the new military base construction.

A spokesman for the local police has said they have 16 hostages and are holding them for ransom and safe passage out of the region. They are being held in a new office building that is almost completed that is to be the main administrative building for the new base.

The New Sons of Ludd are demanding the release of the four accused vandals who were arrested last week in association to the noted vandalism against Thetford Construction. The four were arrested onsite planting explosives at this same building. Their trial date had not yet been set. Currently, the Police are withholding their names, sighting additional investigating into their previous activities. The New Sons of Ludd are also demanding $3.6 million and a helicopter to carry them to Mexico. Police had yet to respond to their demands.

The Harrow Project

Monday, June 15th, 2009

I have contemplated much in the Ether of Woe. In the Ether of Woe I have pondered the possibility of running a play by email game for my Bureau. To this end I have climbed aboard the Web of Ether and searched for information on this subject. One of the resources I found was The Harrow Project.

The Harrow Project is “The Harrow is an Open Access peer-reviewed online literary magazine devoted to publishing original and complete works of fantasy and horror. Young, new, and amateur writers are especially welcome to submit their work. Writers will participate in a formal review process and work with the editor on any revisions that are requested before acceptance. The Harrow is intended to be a place to begin rather than to end and works to support writers as they develop their careers.” This taken from their self published “Focus and Scope” document.

I had originally tripped across these works year ago and reviewed their articles about Role Playing Games in general and found them very informative. Rediscovering them now has given me additional insight as to my own games. I thought I would share this resource with everyone in hopes of finding additional resources down the road.

Agent Sunglasses

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

These glasses are more than just a stylish pair of sunglasses. Though they appear as sunglasses, they also provide enhanced night vision, ultraviolet, infrared and up to 100x magnification and limited Kirlian aura detection.

Optionally the Agent can plug the glasses into a Bureau PDA or laptop and use the glasses as a camera. While in this mode, the glasses to not use the internal batteries and solar power, but the power provided through the USB connection.

Game Connection: The sunglasses provide, +25 flash defense, +50 to spot in dark or near dark conditions, as well as 100x magnification for distance viewing.

The previous text was borrowed from the Bureau 12 d20 edition. See the books and their publisher for more information on the glasses or Kirlian detectors. (as they apply to these games only!)

The Badge

Friday, June 12th, 2009

An Agent’s badge is an integral part of the their equipment. It not only provides the Agent with proof of authority to others, it also provides the Agent with a means to identify other Agents as well as a protection shield, in a literal sense.

The badge is created at the time of the Agents training and is tied to their life force. No other Agent can gain a benefit from another Agent’s badge. Also, if separated from their owner, the badge can be used, by other Bureau personnel only, to track back to its owner.

Abilities include:

  • Limited morph capability to shape change into one of many Federal agency badges (FBI, CIA, CID, NCIS, NSA, and ATF to name a few). If the badge is stolen or lost, it will change its shape to a default shape of a blank metal plate, appearing as a dull gray in the shape of a eighth inch thick credit card. However, in its natural shape it is formed into a standard looking gold badge of the type used by police agencies the world wide.
  • Activation key required to enter any Bureau facility.
  • Identification
  • Tracking of and being tracked by other Agent badges and Bureau facilities. The tracking of the badges is limited to the Agents assigned to their current Team, as well as their current base of operations. Though it has been proven, time and again, this tracking can be blocked; the Bureau is researching new ways to prevent this.
+10 resistance to magical damage when in possession of owner.

Thoughts on Role Playing Games

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

I have sometimes wondered “why do I enjoy the Role Playing Games so much?” Now, it might be good to not question ones hobbies so intently, but I just can’t help it.

To start off with, let me define the Role Playing Game atmosphere. Most of the time when I play these games it is a social environment. It is for me what some people have by going to a bar and hanging out. It is a release and an excuse to socialize with others, especially with others of like mentality and interests. I am not into football, so when someone starts talking about all the touch downs and game plays, my eyes start to glaze over and I start planning my grocery list in my head. I am just not interested in that. Those games have a place; they just do not attract my attention.

I have heard it said that Role Playing Games are bad and can lead to all sorts of maladies and illnesses. And to this I will reply, yes, those things can happen. However, I do need to point out that everything in life, that is un-moderated and unchecked by thoughtful introspection, can lead to similar those and outlets. I was listening to the news this morning and heard the story of the 80 year old man who went to the Holocaust Memorial in Washington DC and killed a guard there. I thought it was tragically ironic that such a hateful man would do such a dastardly deed in a place dedicated to the memory of people killed by another tragic hate. Or perhaps the gang related killings that happen all over the world.

I could go on an on about drug and alcohol addiction or any number of other incidents not related to playing Role Playing Games in the slightest, but are a result of unchecked behavior. These negative thoughts are not what this article is about. This article is about why I, an individual, play this Role Playing Games.

Okay, back on topic. DO I view these games are bad? Not in the slightest. However, I am nto one to give my life wholly to them, They are my hobby, I write them, I read about them and I like to play in the games as well as sometimes running the games. There are people out there who loose themselves in the story and stat to believe the games that someone else writes.

Role Playing Games, for me, are a method of expression; a way to relax at the end of the day and let my mind wonder to thoughts of alien civilizations and elvish princesses. My mind during the day is caught up in the facts and figures of everyday life, of the cause and effect of working a job and serving someone else’s goals so that I might earn a paycheck and pay my bills. These are the facts of life, “TANSTAAFL”, “There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch”. Well all pay for it at some time or another.

“What do I get out of the game?” you might ask. I get the enjoyment of a good story. Yes, I have played in games that lack substance, but then we have all watch a TV show or read a book where the story was way off and just a struggle to get through. It is not those games that attract me, it is the games where I am forced to stretch my imagination and solve the riddle. To struggle against the limits of my own intelligence and find the answer that lets my character find the path to the jewel at the end of the path. Over all it is the mental challenge.

I am sure there is a psychological reason buried deep in my past that functions to drive me to such challenges. Perhaps I never got enough of the “play” time as a kids and my imagination is caught up in a cycle of making up for lost time. Or maybe my imagination was allowed to stretch forth as a child and I have allowed my mind to think for solutions out of the normal standards we all have come to expect. After all most of the inventions we take for granted and use everyday have come about form someone who found a situation and had to think about a problem to solve the riddle and invent something new. The electric light bulb, for instance. Or the cotton gin. Or even wheel barrow.

What about the conceptual language we call mathematics? I can see it now…

“Og take two rock now.”
“What is ‘two’ you speak Og?”
“‘Two’ is ‘one’ here,” he says, as he hefts a large rock in his hand. “And ‘one’ here. One and one make two. Me take two rock to make things.”

Now I am sure there was far more to it, but someone had to think outside the box to determine the special nature of concepts that are used in mathematics all the time. Where would anything we have today be if someone had not imagined and conceptualized about calculus or trigonometry. Those things are not in themselves self evident, they have to be thought about and imagined as you learn them today, and we have it far easier than in the day of Isaac Newton or Rene Descartes.

So it boils down to imagination, does it? How could Og be a successful hunter if he could not imagine how best to hunt his antelope prey? Og would not be. Not being a great hunter, he would likely be lonely and die. Without role playing he would not be able to teach his son how to hunt the great bear or fish the salmon in he streams. After all we are not born knowing how to hunt or perform higher mathematics or even change a sparkplug and I have used my imagination many, many times while working on cars or other mechanical ventures. There is nothing like having to put your hands into an engine block where you can not see and have to imagine where your hands have to be to get to a bolt or contact.

I imagine there will be more later as I am continue to free associate and write, but alas for now, I am off to other pursuits of logic and design. Fare thee well, dear reader.

Bureau Agent Armor

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Bureau Agent Suit: Bureau Agents are issued standard black business suits made of a flexible armor cloth that is as supple as silk, but when struck by a projectile, such as a bullet or arrow, the cloth becomes rigid as steel and prevents the projectile from penetrating through the cloth. This armor will stop nearly all projectiles of a caliber less than a .50 caliber machine gun round, or sniper rifle.

In game terms the armor provides 12 points of kinetic protection (modern slug projectiles and arrows) and 5 points of bludgeoning damage from crushing weapons, such as staves and maces. However, do to the supple nature of the cloth, it will not protect the wearer from slower, cutting weapons, such as sword, knivee or bladed weapons. The cloth is also an ablative material that will burn off layers, a bit at a time; this process provides 10 points of energy protection (laser and plasma weapons).

Due to the rigid characteristics of the kinetic energy disbursed from slug weapons, if an Agent receives 4 or more bullet strikes in a single combat round, his armor will become completely rigid he will loose the next combat round while his armor softens again.

Additionally, each energy attack the Agent is protected from will reduce his coverage by the armor by 5%. This is to say, if an Agent is protected from three successful laser rifle attacks, he must roll under 85% (100% – 3×5% = 85%) to remain protected from the next successful laser shot. However, if the laser shot does get through his armor, his armor will not loose additional coverage, though he will take the full damage of the laser shot.

New Sons of Ludd Claim Responsibility for Vandalism

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Thu Jun 11, 2009 9:16am CDT

SOUTH BEND, LA (South Bend Starr) – Police are investigating reports of vandalism at the City Hall construction site  in South Bend. Unknown persons broke into the site owned by Thetford Construction, who is responsible for the newly commissioned City Hall. A spokesman for the construction firm has detailed the damage as great as $1.3 million, but hopes to have the construction back on track by the end of the week.

Claiming responsibility for the vandalism, a tape was delivered to the WMISS news room this morning. The New Sons of Ludd have claimed that unless the construction stops they will continue to perform acts of industrial terrorism against the persons they hold responsible for the destruction of acres of Mississippi river delta. According to police reports, there have been 18 acts of vandalism against various construction sites in the newly formed city limits of South Bend, LA. To date no deaths have been reported, though threats of terrorism are being taken very seriously by federal and local police agencies.

The New Sons of Ludd have been linked with acts of violence in at least three other cities in the past year. Before this past year, though, they have not been heard from and police analysts have suggested this is a new group of environmental activists bent on preventing technological advancements. It is likely they were named for the 19th century workmen who destroyed industrial machines under the name of Luddites, named for Ned Ludd.

New Military Base Construction Begins

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Wed Jun 10, 2009 8:37am CDT

NEW ORLEANS (South Bend Starr) – The Department of Defense announced today groundbreaking on a “combined military” base to be built in Louisiana, on the Mississippi river, near Deer Park. This base is a new concept show piece that will have facilities for each of the four branches; Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. This new base comes at a time when the country’s economy is still recovering from the recession of 2008. Major General McCampbell was reported as saying, “The country is in dire need of a shot in the arm and this military base will help the local community of Louisiana and Mississippi. In addition the research facilities we have planned will help us grow into this new millennium. Our technology is in need to constant grow and restructuring.” The General was instrumental in the placement of this new facility. This amongst growing rumors that the placement of the facility is a direct reaction to additional lobbyist funding by the HumaniGene medical group. Their CEO Katheryne D’Thefford could not be reached for comment.

In association to the new military base was released plans for building a massive military housing structure. This “man made mountain city” will be the largest single man-made structure. Science fiction writers two decades ago coined the term “arcology” and this structure will be the first of its kind in the world. Groundbreaking on this structure is planned to begin early in 2010. MajGen McCampbell was reported saying it is his hopes that both facilities will be completed and operational at the start of 2013.
