I have contemplated much in the Ether of Woe. In the Ether of Woe I have pondered the possibility of running a play by email game for my Bureau. To this end I have climbed aboard the Web of Ether and searched for information on this subject. One of the resources I found was The Harrow Project.
The Harrow Project is “The Harrow is an Open Access peer-reviewed online literary magazine devoted to publishing original and complete works of fantasy and horror. Young, new, and amateur writers are especially welcome to submit their work. Writers will participate in a formal review process and work with the editor on any revisions that are requested before acceptance. The Harrow is intended to be a place to begin rather than to end and works to support writers as they develop their careers.” This taken from their self published “Focus and Scope” document.
I had originally tripped across these works year ago and reviewed their articles about Role Playing Games in general and found them very informative. Rediscovering them now has given me additional insight as to my own games. I thought I would share this resource with everyone in hopes of finding additional resources down the road.
These glasses are more than just a stylish pair of sunglasses. Though they appear as sunglasses, they also provide enhanced night vision, ultraviolet, infrared and up to 100x magnification and limited Kirlian aura detection.
Optionally the Agent can plug the glasses into a Bureau PDA or laptop and use the glasses as a camera. While in this mode, the glasses to not use the internal batteries and solar power, but the power provided through the USB connection.
Game Connection: The sunglasses provide, +25 flash defense, +50 to spot in dark or near dark conditions, as well as 100x magnification for distance viewing.
The previous text was borrowed from the Bureau 12 d20 edition. See the books and their publisher for more information on the glasses or Kirlian detectors. (as they apply to these games only!)
An Agent’s badge is an integral part of the their equipment. It not only provides the Agent with proof of authority to others, it also provides the Agent with a means to identify other Agents as well as a protection shield, in a literal sense.
The badge is created at the time of the Agents training and is tied to their life force. No other Agent can gain a benefit from another Agent’s badge. Also, if separated from their owner, the badge can be used, by other Bureau personnel only, to track back to its owner.
Abilities include:
Bureau Agent Suit: Bureau Agents are issued standard black business suits made of a flexible armor cloth that is as supple as silk, but when struck by a projectile, such as a bullet or arrow, the cloth becomes rigid as steel and prevents the projectile from penetrating through the cloth. This armor will stop nearly all projectiles of a caliber less than a .50 caliber machine gun round, or sniper rifle.
In game terms the armor provides 12 points of kinetic protection (modern slug projectiles and arrows) and 5 points of bludgeoning damage from crushing weapons, such as staves and maces. However, do to the supple nature of the cloth, it will not protect the wearer from slower, cutting weapons, such as sword, knivee or bladed weapons. The cloth is also an ablative material that will burn off layers, a bit at a time; this process provides 10 points of energy protection (laser and plasma weapons).
Due to the rigid characteristics of the kinetic energy disbursed from slug weapons, if an Agent receives 4 or more bullet strikes in a single combat round, his armor will become completely rigid he will loose the next combat round while his armor softens again.
Additionally, each energy attack the Agent is protected from will reduce his coverage by the armor by 5%. This is to say, if an Agent is protected from three successful laser rifle attacks, he must roll under 85% (100% – 3×5% = 85%) to remain protected from the next successful laser shot. However, if the laser shot does get through his armor, his armor will not loose additional coverage, though he will take the full damage of the laser shot.
